I was once you during the holidays. Overwhelmed, anxious, and nervous about meeting up with a stranger to take photos of my kids. Worried if our money would be well spent. Worried if my kids were going to "behave." Stressed out and cutting off tags from clothes from the last minute shopping finds in the car before I set out to have a photoshoot taken of my family. But this year, like Queen Elsa of Arendelle said...I "let it go." I just needed to get my cards DONE.
You want to know something ironic? We didn't have a professional photographer take our photos this year. It wasn't that I didn't line one (or 2 or 3) up, it just didn't happen and the stars weren't aligned. Murphy's law punched me in the face. So there I was, surrendering and ordered a remote control for my camera and a tripod (I know....sooo dramatic). Like a cobbler with kids with no shoes, I was the photographer with no professional family photos! My intention was to get them done, period. I ended up setting up the photo for the back of our card, and I got creative with my super silly front of it ....and thanks to photoshop (the front and back was a mashup of different photos),it was done. Because why? Done is better than perfect.
Let me say that again, done is better than perfect.
This is the year that I realized so many other mottos. Progress over perfection, is another one. But done is better than perfect really hit home. I realized that I had to let go of so many things in order to navigate this season of my life. There's another quote I like, "no matter how slow your progress is, you are still lapping everyone on the couch." How often to we put things off because things aren't perfect?
I saw patterns in potential clients. A few Mom friends would say that they wanted to book a session "once they lost weight" or once "school was out" or a bunch of other reasons to delay. And these moms have let years passed. I wish I could shake them and say, "You are enough. You are beautiful as you. The time is now. " Sometimes we hold on to idea of a perfect scenario, when it doesn't serve us. And I'm not talking about taking photos, I am talking about following our passion, trying something new, even making a new friend.
So I present to you a blog that *should have* been posted last week. But heck, I got it DONE on the 5th day of January. So, bring on the imperfection. Bring on the flaws. Bring on the chaos! Happy New Year!!! Thank you to my incredible clients below for making 2017 so memorable. I enjoyed shooting at new locations like Disneyland, and working with Girlbosses! We did move to our a new home in Ranch Palos Verdes this year as well and said goodbye to our place in Manhattan Beach. I even had my first magazine cover of Danika Brysha that I am super proud of! I am also connecting with you all of with exclusive content when you as an INsider. I have been so touched with your responses to my newsletter!
As a mom, I do think it is important to have photos with you in them. Set up your iPhone on self time mode and make some magic. Come see me, come see someone else. If you don't have updated photos let's get your family photos done as soon as you have an hour during your weekend. I have heard it too many times where people just couldn't make it happen for their holiday cards because it is definitely a crazy time of year and I tell you, it isn't about the card! It is about an annual gathering you can do with your family with me or anyone else you want. This is the youngest you will be, and that your kids will be. I purposely am sharing photos where you can see people's faces too, because if you don't get in photos with your kids where we can see you, what memory will they have of you? We are ALL imperfectly perfect. Remember that! There is nothing more beautiful than capturing love and joy, and you don't have to be a particular weight or in a perfect for outfit for that!
In 2018, my passion for capturing motherhood and girlbosses is stronger than ever, I hope to see you soon. I'll be sharing my reflections on 2017 in the next post and what you can apply a few practices to make your days better. In 2018, I am not working around a motto, but rather a word. My word? IMPACT. I want everything I do to cause an impact. My first thing I am tackling is my health, which is why I decided to do the Whole 30 challenge in January! I'm sharing my journey on Instagram and will be sharing helpful resources here too!
